Whether you are here because you live with a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) like Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, or another type of colitis, SIBO, IBS, or some undiagnosed but stubborn gut issue, a liquid meal replacement may be a good tool in your digestive health toolbox.
My favorite meal replacement for myself and my clients is called Elemental Heal. Formulated by Dr. Ruscio who specializes in gut conditions, this is a high-quality, clean formula. I personally do not endorse products like Ensure or Boost. The ingredients do not meet my standards.
Elemental Heal is whey protein, a complete form of protein, although there are whey-free versions. I find myself and clients who don’t tolerate other forms of dairy do fine with whey.
Who is this for?
Well, it could be for anyone, but it is especially helpful for anyone going through digestive issues.
Why/when to use liquid nutrition?
The cool thing about this product is that it can be used in a few different ways. When mixed with water and drank as a protein shake, it can be used as a liquid nutrition fast for a few days or a week or two. If you are reactive to lots of things you eat and want to do a digestive reset, you can do it with Elemental Heal. I have worked with several clients who started with Elemental Heal in my practice and they built tolerance up before I had them reintroduce solid foods back in.
You can also use this as your protein powder in a smoothie and use it as a meal replacement or adjunct to a meal.
If you are someone whose digestion doesn’t feel ready for a full breakfast in the morning but you need fuel, this could be a good option.
It is a great product to travel with to ensure you have some safe and healthy nutrition wherever you are.
I included Elemental Heal smoothies in the meal plans in my Eating for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis ebook!
What are the benefits?
It is easily digestible.
It is well-tolerated among people with gut issues.
It contains vitamins and minerals so it is not just a protein powder, it is a meal replacement.
It gives your gut a break from working hard to digest.
It tastes great!
Steal my favorite recipe combo
Use ~ 4oz of water
2-4 scoops of Elemental Heal (I do 2 if I am using it as a snack or adjunct to a meal, 4 for a more full meal)
1 banana
1/3 C canned pumpkin
Ice
Blend!
I often add in some of my favorite electrolytes, LMNT, and a fiber or prebiotic supplement that can be purchased through my supplement store.
In conclusion
I recommend anyone with Crohn’s, colitis, or other gut issues to keep Elemental Heal in their kitchen as least as an emergency product. I personally use it semi-regularly because I enjoy the taste so much and sometimes, I just want a smoothie!
