A Cavegirl’s Best Friend

Meat might be my favorite food group. Especially steak. Love steak. Now, salads are not usually my first choice for a meal UNLESS they have some sustenance to them. Just like this Sirloin Steakhouse Salad with a delicious avocado-garlic dressing!

It’s not just that I love the flavors of meat, but it is one of my feel-good foods. I learned early on that I need animal protein to keep my Crohn’s in check. Without any meat, my energy tanks and I am less-energetic.

I guess I’m a true cavegirl.

I feel bad for beef, though. It has really taken a beating over the years. Sadly, this is due to misinformation pumped out by faulty studies.

You know the ones, that meat is a major cause of cancer and all that is bad? But, the thing is, people are not questioning the source and preparation of this meat.

Clearly, grass-fed, organic meat from cows treated correctly is not the majority of the meat taking up space in our grocery stores. If the studies are redone with meat from cattle eating grass, not given antibiotics, hormones, and provided plenty of space to roam and forage, and are not fed GMO and pesticide-laden corn and soy, the same studies will yield vastly different results.

I purchase the best quality meat I can and that is why I don’t worry about my meat consumption.

Depending on where you live, it can be tricky to find meat of the highest quality. Luckily, more people are becoming aware of the health implications and it is becoming more widespread.

PRE Brands

PRE Brands is one of those companies striving to reach people looking for grass-fed and organic meats, everywhere. I am so lucky that they are in BJ’s Wholesale Club, which my family shops at! I am able to stock up on various cuts of beef there.

If you do not have a BJ’s near you or you don’t shop there, I am happy to say there are more options!

PRE Brands is sold on Amazon Fresh (woo hoo!) and now, as of mid-April 2017, it’s available in Shaw’s and Star Market supermarkets in New Hampshire, Maine, and the Boston area!

This is FANTASTIC news! Check your Shaw’s and Star Market stores for ribeye and sirloin steaks, especially. You can thank me later. 🙂

I love PRE Brands for some of the following reasons:

  • They are committed to never using hormones or antibiotics.
  • No feedlots.
  • Entirely grass-fed.
  • No chemicals are used to dye the meat (yes, your conventional meat may have dyes to make it look more appealing and/or extend shelf life).
  • They are conveniently packaged. The meat comes in a completely clean vacuum-sealed package with recipes & nutritional information.

You can go to their “Where to Buy” page to find out where you can purchase your own grass-fed beef!

Even on a budget, I prioritize healthy, clean meat, always. If you haven’t made the switch yet, it’s okay! Educating yourself is the first step. Then, locate how you can obtain better quality meat. If you want to transition one type of food, such as just beef first and work your way to trying out other brands for chicken, pork, etc. that is fine, too.

In the warmer months when there is a ton of grilling going on, serving your steak with a salad is a great way to lighten up the meal and make sure veggies are still making it into your diet!

Now, tell me what is YOUR favorite cut of beef and how do you prepare it?
