I have always been intrigued by essential oils and how to utilize them for Crohn’s. The author of this guest post, C’Anna, is an essential oil expert! Her passion for essential oils grew from being a cancer survivor. She is passionate about holistic and natural ways to treat and heal. This post was full of new information for me. I hope you learn something new, too!
Essential Oils May Be Trending, But They’re Not New
Essential oils have been used to treat a variety of ailments since ancient times. They’re truly nature’s medicine and are mentioned extensively throughout the Bible, and are commonly used throughout Asia and Europe. Essential oils are most frequently distilled, or cold pressed from the flowers, leaves, stems, rind and bark of plants. Essential oils are a plant’s first line of defense and act as their immune system.
If you’ve ever peeled an orange or smelled a rose, you’ve experienced the power of essential oils.
Within the past few years, essential oils have become far more mainstream in the US than ever before. This is both a blessing and a curse. The essential oil industry, much like cosmetics and supplements industries are not regulated by the FDA and are governed by laws dating back to 1938.
Unfortunately this means a manufacturer can add one drop of essential oil, regardless of quality, to any type of carrier oil and market it as pure essential oil.
Not All Essential Oils Are Created Equal
Because essential oils take time, care and intensive labor to produce, many manufacturers produce sub-par oils and sell them under the guise of being pure and natural when in fact they are adulterated with synthetic ingredients added that provide no therapeutic benefit and can even be harmful.
I always say “buyers beware” if you see essential oils in large box stores such as Wal-Mart and Target. The reason they’re less expensive is because they’re not real!
Enter doTERRA® essential oils – the most pure essential oils on the market. Seeking to bring essential oils mainstream, doTERRA® recognized the need for higher quality and purity standards. They established the Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG®) benchmark for quality. Relying not just on internal testing, they partnered with certified laboratories to verify the purity and quality of their oils.
You can be confident that when using doTERRA® oils, you’re using the highest quality, most therapeutic oils available.
Which Oils Should You Use for Crohn’s?
Because essential oils are carbon-based and made up of complex chemical profiles; they’re able to penetrate our cells unlike synthetic medications, and in turn they help our body heal itself naturally.
Gastrointestinal diseases and conditions tend to be complex, hard-to-treat issues because of the intricacy of the digestive system. We now know that 70% of our immune system resides in our intestines, so when something goes amiss our entire bodies feel out of whack.
There are several essential oils that can assist with the symptoms of Crohn’s and work to sooth and repair the inflammation that causes the disease. I’m going to highlight a few of these oils and oil-based products and explain how to use them to assist in treating Crohn’s.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves of the Peppermint plant. It possesses anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties which make it a great choice for soothing intestinal discomfort associated with Crohn’s*.
It’s recommended to take 1-2 drops in an empty veggie capsule, or dilute it and apply directly to the abdomen.
Basil Essential Oil
Basil essential oil is also recommended to those suffering with Crohn’s. It is a powerful antispasmodic oil that assists in soothing stomach cramps and associated discomfort.*
Basil happens to be one of my personal favorites. I’m drawn to the aroma and love to use it for digestive support, mental focus and cooking. It is a very versatile!
DigestZen® Essential Oil Blend
Along with singular essential oils, doTERRA® also produces proprietary essential oil blends designed to combine the most effective oils in the right ratio to support certain functions of the body. One such blend is called DigestZen® – often referred to as the “tummy tamer” blend.
DigestZen® combines Ginger Rhizome/Root, Peppermint Plant, Caraway Seed, Coriander Seed, Anise Seed, Tarragon Plant, and Fennel Seed essential oils.
The Ginger, Fennel, and Coriander to help ease stomach discomfort, including motion sickness and indigestion, while the Peppermint, Tarragon, Anise, and Caraway aid with digestion and help maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract.*
DigestZen® is available as an oil, but also comes in two other forms – a gel capsule and a chewable tablet. I love all three and use them depending on the type of digestive issue I’m dealing with. The tablets are excellent for reducing heartburn, indigestion and sour stomach. They’re also great for reducing bloating.*
Essential Oil Based Supplements
Along with utilizing oils to promote digestive health, I highly recommend incorporating essential oil-based supplements into your routine.
One such supplement is doTERRA®’s GX Assist® softgel. These softgels combine Oregano, Melaleuca, Lemon, Lemongrass, Peppermint and Thyme which work together to assist intestinal autoimmune disorders and compromised digestive systems.
These oils possess anti-inflammatory qualities and help restore balance to our digestive systems.*
Probiotics for Gut Health
I’m of the belief that everyone, no matter how healthy their digestive system, should be using a probiotic daily.
Probiotics are healthy bacteria that are essential to maintaining a proper balance in our digestive systems. Because we know 70% of our immune system is in our gut, keeping healthy bacteria thriving there is essential to staying healthy.
Probiotics work to boost our immune system, support those with IBS, leaky gut, autoimmune disorders, diarrhea, malabsportion and more.*
Like essential oils, probiotics have gained mainstream awareness in recent years and you can now buy special yogurt promoting their benefits and find tons of priobiotic supplements lining the shelves of your local drug store.
Here’s what you need to know: like essential oils, not all probiotic supplements are created equal. Probiotics have to make it past your stomach and into your intestines to be effective. Many probiotic supplements are not encapsulated properly and get broken down by our stomach acid and provide no benefit.
I love doTERRA®’s PB Assist® because it’s double-encapsulated and time-release designed to not break down in our stomachs, but rather in our intestines where we need the beneficial bacteria most.
Use Natural Remedies Whenever Possible
Living with a chronic health condition is never easy.
Digestive issues like Crohn’s can be especially debilitating and make everyday life a challenge. While I believe traditional allopathic medicine has many benefits and can be life-saving, there are natural ways to assist our bodies in healing that don’t produce unwanted side effects and are typically far more cost effective.
Essential oils are an amazingly powerful gift of the Earth that are shifting the way we view our health and treatment options. Being empowered to have control over bodies and treatment options is a wonderful gift. If you’d like to learn more about essential oils please contact me via my website: www.theessentialearth.com.
